Multi-Author Comment Notifications with WP Comment Notifier

One of the problems we’ve run into here on RA Project is notifying all of the project members when someone leaves a comment, no matter what the post.

Typically, the author who writes the post only receives the comment notification e-mail. However, there have been many instances where one of the authors doesn’t respond to a reader either because the e-mail wasn’t sent, or the e-mail was accidentally overlooked.

Bes and I realized this problem early on, but there wasn’t much we could do. We experimented with setting up an admin e-mail and have the e-mail forwarded on to both of us. This worked only sometimes.

This weekend I discovered a WordPress plugin called Comment Notifier. What comment notifier allows you to do is specify which e-mail addresses will receive an e-mail anytime somebody leaves a comment. This is a dream come true plugin for multi-author blogs where authors like to be kept in the loop.

Plugin Benefits

We’ve had the plugin installed here for about four days now, and I can immediately see the reader benefits. Now all of the authors will be notified of comments, and comment replies.

Here’s a short list of the benefits of having this WordPress plugin.

  • All blog authors are notified of any comments and replies.
  • Blog authors are kept in the loop of the blog’s happenings.
  • Readers theoretically get more attention since their comment is being seen by all authors.
  • One author can pick up another author’s slack if one happens to be away.
  • Outsiders can receive notifications as well.

Plugin Drawbacks

One of the main drawbacks I noticed right away is the increase in e-mails. If you happen to subscribe to a post as an author, you’ll get as many as two e-mails per comment (depending on the post). If you are the author of the post, you’ll also get two e-mails per comment.

With Google Mail, this is almost a non-issue, but I can see how the substantial increase in e-mails can be overwhelming to some.

Conclusion

If you have a multi-author blog, this plugin is essential to have. It keeps all of the authors in the loop as far as comments go. The plugin is very flexible and allows the addition or deletion of as many e-mail addresses as necessary.

Even if you don’t have a multi-author blog, you may be in a situation where you want an outsider to be kept in the loop of blog comments, or perhaps have comment e-mails sent to alternate e-mail addresses.

Please visit the Comment Notifier plugin page if you are interested in having this plugin on your WordPress blog.

I like it. Before, I needed to comment to other authors’ posts in order to receive the comments. The drawback of increasing the number of emails is not that big, if we think that when subscribing to a very commented post I usually get a ton of messages anyway.
