Share blog income with your readers

Share your blog income with blog readersWhile leaving nice comments and appreciating readers verbally can be a nice thing, sharing your blog income with your readers in different ways can show how much you appreciate people. You can share the money you earn through your blog by giving it back to the community in many different ways, including contests that are not focused on making your blog more popular, surprise gifts, and even funding smaller projects started by your readers.

Sharing money is the big step towards appreciating others

If you share your blog income with your readers, you are basically telling your readers that you earned that money because of your readers, and you want to give them something as a form of appreciation. Many, if not most, of the prominent bloggers today depend on readers to earn their living. However, very rarely does any of them ever want to give back anything to the community. Sure, saying nice words is something, but sharing a small amount of money with a random user or two from time to time not only shows appreciation to others, but also allows us to know ourselves that we like making money and we also like sharing it with those who help us reach this spot.

Perils in sharing blog income with readers

The topic of money is a very sensitive one, and thus many people feel that even friends should not get involved in monetary deals as such deals might ruin friendships. Therefore, even online, it might be easy to severe your relationship with your readers if you allow the concept of money to affect different things, or if you take this issue lightly. You may be sharing money with readers for 6 months and then when you stop, some of your readers may realize that they came to your site only for the money. They will thus not find any good incentive to come to your site anymore. You have to figure out for your own specific situation how to share your blog income, and how to make sure your readers do not count on that sharing as being the only reason to come to your site.

What is your opinion on this? Would you mind sharing your blog income with your readers?

Thank you for reading. :)

I think it depends very much on what you are trying to achieve with a site, but in general I think money is best kept away from blogs.

My site won’t feature ads and won’t make any money because I honestly feel it reduces the weight of what I write. Whatever weight it has anyway. I could write something really meaningful and have interpreted differently because of the appearance of trying to generate revenue.

For someone who is a professional blogger I think it is fine to run a competition now and again but I think money, by being given away, will have an impact on the apparent integrity of the writer. Are they giving it away or spending it on prizes to show appreciation or to generate more readers and therefore more money?

If you have a project you care about and want to give away a sweatner to contributers or if you want to make a one-off gesture, then I have no issues with that but I would begin to question the motives of someone who did it regularly.

Andrew, you’re right, it does depend on what one wants to do with the site. It can be hard to figure out whether a blogger gives back to the community in order to appreciate, or if they want to give back to the community in order to advertise and get more visitors, and thus like you said, get “more money.

So in your view, doing it regularly may cause suspicion or doubt in the minds of readers, as doing it regularly may be overdoing it. I wonder how such feelings of doubts can be addresses so that a person can give back regularly, and I also wonder what frequency rate, of giving back, would be nice and what rate of giving back would be more beneficial for the blogger and less for the readers. Thanks for your input on this, it surely makes me think more about this.
